What You Need to Know

Gonorrhea and chlamydia are VERY common. The United States Centers for Disease Control estimates there are nearly a half-million gonorrhea infections each year and more than 2.5 million chlamydia infections. But just because they’re common doesn’t mean they’re not serious. Untreated, gonorrhea can lead to infertility in both women and men. Chlamydia can also adversely affect reproductive health.

Both gonorrhea and chlamydia can be cured. If you test positive, you will be prescribed medication to cure the infection. While the medication can cure the infection, it won’t reverse any resultant damage from the infection, so it’s important to get tested and on medication quickly. Likewise, it’s important to take all of the medication as prescribed in order to get the best results.

What’s the Difference Between an STI and an STD?

While STD (sexually transmitted disease) is the more common term, STI (sexually transmitted infection) is more accurate, and thus preferred by medical professionals. Many sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, may not result in symptoms, and for those people would not be defined as disease. STI is therefore more inclusive.

If you suspect you have a sexually transmitted infection, contact Sira in Gainesville today. Our trained medical professionals will administer a free confidential test in our private, friendly clinic. Don’t be embarrassed and don’t put it off. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
