Is Abortion Pill Reversal Safe?

Updated: Aug 21

Nearly half of all abortions in the United States are now performed via chemical abortion, better known as the abortion pill. The procedure actually requires ingesting two separate pills roughly 48 hours apart. It is not uncommon, however, for women to reconsider their decision after taking the first pill. In these cases, they may elect to try abortion pill reversal, a process researchers have found to be safe and effective for maintaining pregnancies.

A Record of Safety and Efficacy

A report published by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, titled, “Abortion Pill Reversal: A Record of Safety and Efficacy,” cites medical research and case studies that found abortion pill reversal effectively enabled the majority of women to maintain their pregnancies with, “zero increased risk of birth defects or preterm births.”

Given the importance of this alternative, many states now require healthcare providers who provide the abortion pill to also advise their patients of the availability of abortion pill reversal.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

Again, the “abortion pill” is really a series of two pills, which must be prescribed by a medical professional. The first pill, which contains mifepristone, is taken at the abortion clinic. It blocks the womb from absorbing the hormone progesterone. This causes the uterine lining to start breaking down, while also loosening the cervix.

The second pill, which contains misoprostol, is then typically taken 48 hours later. It causes cramping and bleeding, which expels the developing baby, completing the abortion process.

How Does Abortion Pill Reversal Work?

If a woman takes only the first of the two abortion pills, introducing high levels of progesterone can often save the pregnancy. These high levels of progesterone, a natural hormone known to be safe for mothers and babies alike, overpower the blocks created by the mifepristone.

The key is acting quickly. Abortion pill reversal is most effective when initiated within the first 24 hours after taking the mifepristone pill, although it can be effective if started within up to 72 hours.

A medical professional must prescribe this progesterone treatment, and it is often continued through the remainder of the first trimester.
