What is a Pregnancy Confirmation Ultrasound?
Soon after a positive pregnancy test result, an ultrasound exam should be conducted to confirm the pregnancy and to determine whether the pregnancy is viable. This is a limited obstetrical ultrasound exam, meaning it is solely intended to determine:
If the baby has a heartbeat
Whether the baby is in the uterus or if there’s a risk of an ectopic pregnancy
How far along the pregnancy is
Subsequent Pregnancy Ultrasounds
As pregnancy progresses, you’ll need additional ultrasound exams. During the first trimester, ultrasounds are typically used to examine the placenta, uterus, ovaries and cervix, and to look for any abnormal growth in the baby. Later in pregnancy, ultrasounds are used to monitor the baby’s growth and position, determine the baby’s sex, check for signs of possible birth defects, monitor amniotic fluid levels and more.
