How to Tell Your Boyfriend You’re Pregnant

If you didn’t plan on having a baby, there is literally nothing scarier than telling your boyfriend you’re pregnant. Even if he’s, “the best guy in the world,” you can’t be sure how he’ll react – will he blame you, will he hate you, will he leave you? How can you possibly tackle this overwhelming task?

Step 1: Breathe.

Your heart is probably pounding out of your chest. Your pulse and blood pressure are soaring. Take time to focus on yourself, your body, and your well-being. Take deep breaths and exhale slowly. Intentionally focusing on your body’s natural, necessary functions can help reduce anxiety and center you.

Step 2: Confirm the test result.

Even if you got a positive result from an over-the-counter pregnancy test, there’s a chance you are not pregnant. Get a medical pregnancy test to confirm the result. If that is positive, a limited OB ultrasound is the next step, to ensure the pregnancy is viable.

Step 3: Search your heart.

You just learned that there is a baby growing inside of you. Hopefully, you will embrace that as an opportunity to nurture a brand new life. Your baby is completely reliant upon you to make loving decisions at this point.

Step 4: Have the talk.

There is no magic formula for telling your boyfriend you’re pregnant. Be honest and straightforward. The news will likely come as a shock, so allow him time to adjust. Then, share your plans for moving forward. If you don’t see eye to eye, seek counseling before making a rash decision.

Step 5: Do what is best for your baby.

No matter how your boyfriend reacts, you are ultimately responsible for the decision you make. If he’s not willing to support you, there are many other people who are. You are never alone. Sira can connect you with resources to ensure you and your baby are well cared for.
